Club Med History
In 1949, Gérard Blitz, a two-time Olympic medalist from Belgium, stayed at the Olympic Club’s tent village on the Isle of Corsica. There, he formulated the idea that, one year later, would become Club Mediterranée. The first Club Med opened on Alcudia Beach in the Balearic Islands, with 300 tents as accommodations. 300 guests arrived on the first day, and the relaxed, fun resort became so popular, that over 2,500 guests spent part of the summer there, and an additional 10,000 had to be turned away from lack of space.
By 1955, Club med had opened a resort in Tahiti, and in 1956, Club Med began opening winter resorts. Today, Club Med operates 80 Villages in 5 continents.
